Laser Powder Bed Fusion
Laser powder bed fusion is a precise layer-by-layer process where a laser beam fuses metal powder layers. It allows high geometric accuracy and complex structures.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
A laser beam is directed onto a layer of metal powder covered by computer-controlled movements. The laser provides local heating and fusion of the powder layers, creating a thin metal band. This process is repeated layer by layer until the desired 3D object is fully built.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The high local heating and precise control enable excellent geometric resolution and complex internal structures. However, an inaccurate laser system can lead to missing connections or excessive stresses, which can damage the material. Furthermore, the selection of powder chambers is crucial for the quality of the final product.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For successful Laser Powder Bed Fusion, the following steps must be observed:
• Powder Preparation: The metal powder must be clean and finely sieved to ensure a homogeneous bond.
• Set Laser Parameters: The laser energy and travel speed must be precisely set to achieve the desired layer thickness and material behavior.
• Post-Processing: After building the 3D object, post-processing is required to relieve any stresses and improve the surface finish.
