Laser shielding gas helium

Helium is a noble gas with a high ionization potential that controls plasma during laser welding and optimizes energy input. It ensures undisturbed weld depth.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

Helium has a very high ionization potential, which means it ionizes slowly at high temperatures. This prevents other atoms in the plasma from becoming overly ionized and affecting energy distribution. Helium also absorbs ultraviolet light, which stabilizes the plasma and allows a controlled weld.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Helium improves control over the laser plasma, leading to a more precise and finer weld. It also prevents the occurrence of porosity and increases weld strength. Without helium, the plasma can become unstable, leading to inaccurate welding and possible cracks.

Workshop practice & operating instructions

When laser welding, always use helium as shielding gas. Make sure that gas pressure and flow rate are set according to the laser specifications (usually 10-20 l/min). Continuously monitor gas quality and ensure a clean welding environment to achieve optimal results.
