Laser Spot Defocusing

Laser spot defocusing is the deliberate increase of the laser beam diameter to influence the bead shape and boost the material removal rate or deposition rate.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Defocusing a laser increases the beam diameter, spreading the energy over a larger area. This results in a less concentrated energy source and can help keep the material from heating up too much.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Defocusing can reduce weld hardness and lower the risk of hot cracking. However, it can also reduce penetration, leading to incomplete fusion or weak joints.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To use defocusing effectively, set the laser diameter to about 2-3 times the desired size. You can adjust the focus or the lenses. The exact setting depends on the material and the process performance you want.
