Laser Ultrasonic Testing
Laser ultrasonic testing uses lasers to excite ultrasonic waves and optical interferometry for detection. It is a non-contact NDT method for inspecting fine structures and material defects.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Laser ultrasound testing uses a pulsed laser beam to generate ultrasonic waves in a material. These waves propagate through the material and are reflected at any defects or interfaces. The reflected waves are optically compared with a reference wave (interferometry) to determine the position and size of the defects.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This technique is especially useful for checking weld quality because it can detect fine microstructural variations and inclusions. It minimizes the risk of hidden defects and increases component safety. However, the technique is expensive and requires specialized equipment and know-how.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To use laser ultrasound testing in the shop, you need a suitable machine with a pulsed laser system and an interferometry setup. Testing should be done by qualified technicians who know the material and know which parameters (e.g., laser power, pulse duration) are optimal for the job. Make sure the test area is clean and free from interference like sound or electromagnetism.
