Laser Beam Remelting Hardening

A precise surface process in which the surface layer is briefly melted by focused laser radiation and solidifies to be extremely fine-grained due to subsequent self-cooling.

When laser remelting hardening, you only melt the surface layer of the component with the laser beam. The heat is immediately conducted away by the cold core, so the layer hardens by itself – without filler material. You get a hard, wear-resistant surface, but the core stays tough. Be careful not to put in too much energy, otherwise the layer gets too thick or the structure cracks. The hardness must match the base material, otherwise you risk cracks. Prepare cleanly and keep the focus and feed rate uniform, then the hardened zone becomes homogeneous.
