Leak Testing
Leak measurement is a method for detecting cracks or holes in pressure systems by introducing and measuring test gases.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Test gases like helium or oxygen are introduced into the pressure zone. These gases diffuse through any cracks or holes and can then be detected on the other side of the system.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Wrong leak measurements can lead to errors because they only detect the larger holes. With fine cracks or holes, the measuring device may not provide detection. In addition, the pressurization during the measurement can cause damage to the system.
Workshop practice & instructions
Before a leak measurement is performed, the system must be fully depressurized and thoroughly cleaned. The amount of test gas should be precisely determined to avoid too much gas entering the system. The measurement should be carried out under controlled conditions to obtain accurate results.
