Leak Testing

Leak testing checks pressure-bearing systems for gaps or cracks using pressure drop, tracer gases, or vacuum bells. A missing pressure indication points to a gap.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Leak testing is based on holding a system under pressure and then either shutting off the pressure source or bringing the system into a vacuum state. Some methods use tracer gases that escape through a gap into the surrounding medium.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

In leak testing, metallurgical properties such as cracks or lack of density can pose problems. Too much pressure can deform metals, while too long a vacuum state can damage the surface. Incorrectly set up tests can also lead to false results.

Workshop practice & instructions

For pressure leak testing: Make sure the system is fully sealed and the pressure is held stable. When using tracer gases: Ensure that the gas amount and test duration are correct. For vacuum bells: Make sure the vacuum pump is powerful enough and the system is slowly brought into the vacuum state.
