Arc voltage gradient

The ratio of voltage drop per unit length of the arc column, which is decisively influenced by the gas type and arc length.

The voltage drop in the arc is not the same everywhere – it depends on the shielding gas and the arc length. If the arc is too long, the heat is spread wider, and you risk lack of fusion or an unstable weld. If it's too short, the arc can "stick" and the weld will be poorly fused. So run with a calm, steady arc length and adjust the gas to your material – then the gradient will be fine.
