Arc Blow
Arc blow effect is the undesirable deflection of the welding arc due to asymmetric electromagnetic self-fields. It causes unstable processes and insufficient penetration, especially in DC welding.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Arc blow occurs due to asymmetric self-induced electromagnetic fields that deflect the welding arc. These fields can be caused by uneven electrodes or voltage differences.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Arc blow leads to unstable processes and can impair the arc's penetration capability. This can result in insufficient weld volume, lack of fusion, or even cracks in the weld. Especially with DC welding, susceptibility to this effect is higher.
Workshop practice & action instructions
To minimize arc blow, the following measures should be taken:
• Ensure symmetric electrodes and consistent voltage.
• Use quality welding equipment with stable electrical characteristics.
• Regularly check and calibrate equipment to avoid asymmetric fields.
