Manual Metal Arc Welding with Rutile Coating

Shielded metal arc welding with a rutile covering is a stick welding process known for easy arc striking and a fine ripple weld appearance. It uses a titania-based electrode coating.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Stick welding with rutile flux uses the energy of an arc to melt metals. The titanium dioxide electrode coating (rutile) makes arc striking easier and prevents corrosion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

This technique works well for general structural steel because it gives a nice bead appearance. But a bad flux can make starting the arc hard and lead to uneven weld distribution.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use electrodes with rutile flux. Make sure the flux isn't damaged and that arc starting is easy. Hold the electrode at the right distance from the workpiece and aim for an even weld distribution.
