Arc power density

Arc power density indicates how much electrical power is delivered per unit area of the focus. It affects penetration depth and welding speed.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Arc power density is the ratio of the arc's electrical power to the focus area. A higher power density leads to deeper penetration and increases welding speed.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Too high arc power density can cause deep penetration and high heat input, leading to distortion or even hot cracks in the weld. Too low power density slows welding speed and can cause incomplete fusion.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Set the arc power density to achieve the desired penetration depth. A typical power density for steel is 10 to 20 kW/cm². For Delrin or other plastics, a lower power density of 5 to 10 kW/cm² is sufficient.
