Arc column
The central, quasi-neutral region of the electric arc where the majority of electrical current flow and radiation emission takes place.
The arc is the hot plasma between electrode and workpiece. It is created by the current flow and is the heart of every arc welding process. The length and stability of the arc largely determine how clean the weld seam becomes and how deep the penetration is. If the arc is too long, it becomes unstable and spatters. If it is too short, there is a risk that the electrode will stick to the workpiece. You need to develop a feel for the right distance, then it will run by itself. Adjust the machine so that the arc burns calmly and evenly.
