Linear Porosity
Linear porosity is parallel voids along the weld that reduce impact toughness and soften the material.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Linear pores form through incomplete cooling or too high a melting speed. They form cavities that run parallel to the joint axis.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
These pores reduce the impact toughness and make the material softer, which leads to lower strength. They can also trigger corrosion and reduce the service life of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Avoid linear pores through controlled cooling and an appropriate melting speed. Use suitable shielding gases and keep the joint as short as possible.
