Linear slag inclusions
Linear slag inclusions are solid nonmetallic substances in the weld seam that cause local weak spots.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Linear slag inclusions form through non-metallic substances like dirt, paint or contamination that get into the weld during welding. They stay trapped in the metal and form lines.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
These inclusions weaken the cross-section locally and contaminate the material. They can lead to cracks or fractures in the part and hurt the strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use clean tools and materials. Pay attention to a clean weld pool without contamination. Clean the part thoroughly before welding. If slag inclusions are suspected, check and remove them before continuing.
