Pitting potential

Pitting potential is the electrochemical potential above which the passive layer on a metal surface breaks down and pitting starts. A higher potential increases resistance.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

The pitting potential describes the electrochemical potential at which the passive layer on a metal surface is breached. This leads to localized pitting and can cause corrosion.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A low pitting potential increases the risk of corrosion and pitting, especially in humid environments. This can lead to cracks and loss of mechanical properties.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

To increase the pitting potential and improve resistance, the following measures should be taken:

• Use passivating welding agents or coatings.

• Keep the weld seam dry and protect it from moisture.

• Choose suitable protective agents to increase the pitting potential.
