Solubility limit shift
The temperature-dependent variation in the maximum capacity of a host lattice to dissolve solute atoms, forming the physical basis for precipitation hardening.
When you weld metal and it cools down again, the amount of foreign substances the structure can absorb changes. This is important for hardening. If you cool too fast, the material becomes hard and brittle, it can crack. If you cool too slowly, the grain becomes coarse and the material loses toughness. So you have to control the cooling so that you strike a middle ground, so that the structure gets the desired properties.
