Brazing Gap Sizing

The gap width is chosen so that capillary forces are optimal at brazing temperature and strength is maximized.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The gap width affects the capillary forces between the brazing filler metal and the metal. Too small of a gap can cause stresses, while too large of a gap slows down the filler metal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

An inappropriate gap width can lead to stress formation and cracking. Too small of gaps can cause hot cracks, too large of gaps can cause lack of filling and low strength.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

The gap width should be between 0.2 mm and 1 mm, depending on the metal and brazing temperature. For high-strength steels, a thin gap (about 0.3 mm) is better; for softer metals, the gap can be a bit wider (about 0.5 mm).
