Local Recovery Mechanisms
Relief processes of internal stresses via dislocation motion, rearrangement, and annihilation in deformed crystallites at moderate temperatures without forming new boundaries, stabilizing toughness.
This is recovery in the structure. Dislocations rearrange in the crystal lattice and internal stresses are reduced without the structure fundamentally transforming. If this doesn't happen properly, stresses remain in the weld, which can later lead to cracks or distortion – especially with high-strength steels, you have to watch out there.
In practice, this means: Don't let the weld cool too quickly. If you slow down the cooling, you give the material time to settle and relieve the stresses.
