Filler-Base Metal Interaction

The mutual diffusion of atoms between solder and base material during brazing affects the thickness and brittleness of the intermetallic transition zone.

Physikalisch-chemischer Wirkmechanismus

During brazing, atoms diffuse between the molten filler metal and the solid base metal. This forms an intermetallic transition zone (IZ) where the chemical composition changes continuously.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A too thin IZ can lead to poor bonding and corrosion sensitivity. A too thick IZ can impair mechanical properties and cause brittleness and cracking. Wrong filler metal or temperature can disrupt these interactions.

Werkstattpraxis & Handlungsanweisungen

Use a filler metal suited to the specific base metal. Keep the brazing temperature steady and avoid rapid cooling to get a uniform IZ. Check the IZ thickness regularly with a microscope.
