MAG Short Arc
MAG short-arc welding uses periodic short circuits of the welding wire at low voltage. It is ideal for thin sheets and out-of-position welding due to low heat input.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
MAG short-arc welding uses periodic short circuits of the welding wire in the weld pool. At low voltage, the wire short-circuits at short intervals, controlling energy input and melting.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This process is ideal for thin sheets and out-of-position welding because it requires low heat input. It reduces the risk of distortion and warping. However, a lack of short-circuiting can lead to incomplete fusion, resulting in porosity and weak spots in the weld.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
For thin sheets and out-of-position welds, use a MAG short-arc welding machine with low voltage. Make sure the wire short-circuits regularly (approx. 10-20 ms). Monitor the weld pool temperature and current flow to ensure optimal fusion.
