Magnetic Arc Constriction

Magnetic arc constriction is a phenomenon where the electric current of the arc exerts a radial compressive force on the arc column. This prevents run-out and improves the weld.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The arc produces a strong electric current that generates magnetic fields. These fields act on the electrode and create a radial compressive force that constricts the column.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Magnetic arc constriction prevents the column from flaring out and improves the weld. Without this constriction, the column could flare, leading to an uneven weld and possible cracks.

Shop Practice & Action Instructions

Make sure the arc is set correctly. The compressive force should be between 100 and 200 N. Monitor the column during welding for any flaring.
