Magnetic leakage flux
Magnetic flux leakage is the escape of magnetic field lines at a flaw in magnetizable material, attracting test particles and making cracks visible as lines.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Magnetic stray fields occur when magnetic field lines break off or branch out at a defect in the material. This happens especially at cracks or stress fields.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
High magnetic stray flux can be an indicator of internal material defects or cracks. Misinterpreting it can lead to wrong judgments, which could make the material unusable.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use magnetizers with a known field strength profile. Check the weld for visible lines or attraction forces on particles. If internal defects are suspected, carry out a microscopic analysis.
