Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic particle crack detection is a test method for ferromagnetic materials where a magnetic field highlights flaws by binding magnetic particles to them.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A magnetic field is applied to the surface to be tested. Ferromagnetic particles in the powder are attracted by the magnet and gather where material is missing or defective.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This test detects cracks, damage, and inconsistencies in the material structure. Missing detection can lead to safety risks, as defective workpieces could be further processed or put into service.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

1. Prepare the surface clean and dry.

2. Sprinkle magnetic powder on the area to be tested.

3. Apply the magnetic field and move it slowly over the surface.

4. Watch where the particles gather (flaws).

5. Document all found defects.
