Macro-Hardness Testing
Macro hardness testing determines the average hardness of a material over a larger area. It uses large test forces and is suitable for homogeneous materials.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The macro hardness test measures the hardness of a material by pressing a heavy body (e.g., a ball indenter) into the material and measuring the depth of penetration. The test force can be up to 1000 N, giving a precise measure of hardness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Macro hardness gives an overview of the average hardness of a component and is useful for quality assurance. Incorrect test conditions can lead to inaccurate results, which in turn can cause wrong conclusions about material selection or treatment.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a macro hardness tester with a test force of at least 1000 N. Make sure the material is homogeneous and the test area is free of damage or deformation. Perform the measurement in a cool environment to minimize factors such as temperature.
