Macro Examination
A low-magnification cross-sectional examination used to inspect a weld joint. It allows rapid evaluation of penetration, pass sequence, and macro-defects.
Cut out a sample across the weld, grind it flat and polish it. Then etch the surface so that weld metal, heat-affected zone and base material stand out clearly. With the naked eye or a magnifying glass you can see layer build-up, lack of fusion, porosity, cracks, or whether the weld is fully penetrated.
