Manganese

Manganese is a strong deoxidizer that prevents porosity. It also increases hardenability and suppresses iron sulfides.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Manganese reacts with oxygen in the molten pool to form deoxidizers. This prevents porosity and improves the hardenability of the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Too much manganese can lead to increased hardness and lower ductility, which can cause cracks and wear. Also, it can form unwanted iron sulfides that damage the structure.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use manganese in concentrated amounts (about 1-2 %) for stiff alloys like HSS or steel. Make sure the manganese content isn't too high to avoid hardness and iron sulfide issues.
