Manganese deoxidation

Manganese is added to the weld pool to tie up oxygen and form manganese silicates. This prevents porosity and improves strength.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Manganese reacts with dissolved oxygen in the melt to form manganese silicates. This compound binds the oxygen firmly and prevents it from entering the metal structure as porosity.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Adequate manganese deoxidation results in a fine-grained, porosity-free weld with increased strength. Too little manganese, however, can allow oxygen to enter the metal structure as porosity, degrading the toughness and mechanical behavior of the weld.

Shop Practice & Instructions

Add 0.1 to 0.3 % manganese to the metal melt during melt preparation. Ensure the melt is well protected from oxygen ingress and that the deoxidation steps are carried out correctly.
