Manganese deoxidation effect
Manganese reacts with oxygen in molten steel, forming manganese oxides and preventing porosity. This improves the strength and toughness of the weld.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Manganese reacts with dissolved oxygen in the liquid steel to form manganese oxides. These are harmless and prevent pore formation. At the same time, manganese promotes the formation of FeMn-S inclusions that improve mechanical properties.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
Sufficient manganese deoxidation prevents porosity and boosts weld strength. Too little manganese can cause poor deoxidation, leading to pores and cracks in the structure.
Workshop practice & instructions
Make sure the steel has enough manganese (typically 0.5 to 1.2 %). If deoxidation is lacking, you can use extra deoxidizers like silicon or titanium. Keep an eye on the temperature and the cooling process to get the best manganese deoxidation effect.
