Manganese (Mn)

Manganese ties up oxygen and prevents pores, boosting strength and scale resistance.

Physical-chemical mechanism of action

Manganese reacts with free oxygen in the molten pool and forms manganese oxide. This prevents pores from forming in the weld.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Too high a manganese content can make the grain structure harder, leading to higher hardness and lower ductility. This can result in cracks and fractures in the material.

Workshop practice & instructions

Make sure the manganese content in the melt is between 0.8 % and 1.2 %. Check the molten pool temperature and the cooling process carefully.
