Hadfield steel microstructure degradation
The undesirable carbide precipitation at austenitic grain boundaries resulting from improper thermal exposure, leading to severe brittleness and cracking.
Manganese hard steel is a tough, wear-resistant steel that hardens itself through cold working. When welding, you have to be careful not to put too much heat into it. If the steel gets too hot, the structure can coarsen and it becomes brittle. It's important to keep the heat input low and not overheat the weld unnecessarily. Best to weld with a low current and let the workpiece cool between passes to maintain toughness.
