Hadfield Steel As-Cast Microstructure Anisotropy
The directional formation of the crystal structure in the as-cast state of Hadfield steel, requiring subsequent solution annealing to eliminate coarse dendritic structures and maximize toughness.
Manganese hard steel has a coarse, directional structure in the as-cast state. That makes the material tricky when welding because it can tend to crack. That's why you absolutely have to solution anneal the part before welding. Only then do you get a uniform structure and the weld seam holds up properly.
