Hadfield Steel Work Hardening Mechanism
Manganese hard steel becomes harder and tougher through mechanical stress, making the surface wear-resistant.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Mechanical loading of manganese hard steel causes dynamic dislocation pile-ups and twin-induced phase transformations. These processes result in a sudden hardening of the austenitic matrix.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Improper handling can lead to uneven hardness distribution and increased wear risk. Excessive loading can coarsen the microstructure, reducing toughness.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
When welding manganese hard steel, use controlled mechanical loading. Keep the maximum loading below 1000 N/mm² and ensure uniform load distribution. If needed, a post-hardening process can be applied to further increase surface wear resistance.
