Hadfield steel impact wear

Manganese steel impact wear is a specific wear mechanism caused by high-frequency impact loading. Manganese steel has high resistance to this wear due to its dynamic hardening.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Manganese hard steel contains a lot of manganese and forms a thin, harder layer at the surface under load. This dynamic work hardening provides higher hardness and better mechanical properties.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Wrong welding parameters can hurt the dynamic work hardening, which can lead to increased wear. Too high a carbon content or too fast cooling can reduce the surface hardness.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

When welding manganese hard steel, use a suitable filler metal and pay attention to controlled cooling. Keep the carbon content under 0.4% and use suitable processes like MAG or TIG welding.
