Hadfield Steel Wear Mechanism
An abrasive and impact loading condition where the surface remains hard due to continuous work hardening while the underlying softer material absorbs impact energy. This maximizes service life in crushing plants.
Manganese hard steel only hardens under impact or shock loading on the surface. When welding, you must be careful that the heat doesn't get too high, otherwise carbides precipitate in the grain structure and the steel becomes brittle. So weld cold and in short sections so the material cools quickly. If you work the weld with a hammer in between, you can promote work hardening, but don't overdo it. It's important that the weld stays clean and crack-free, then the part will hold up in service.
