Martempering
Step quenching to minimize thermal quenching stresses, where the workpiece is held briefly in a temperature bath just above the martensite start temperature and then cooled slowly. This prevents cracking in complex geometries.
Martempering is a hardening process where you heat the workpiece above the martensite start temperature and then cool it in a controlled way. You get a fine, tempered martensite structure that is hard and still tough. If you mess up during welding or heat treatment, the part either gets too soft or cracks from cooling too fast. The key is keeping the temperature in the right window and not rushing the cooling, then the structure will be right.
