Martensitic Twinning Lamella
Martensite twin lamellae are microscopic mirror symmetries in martensite that help the material deform and increase its hardness during transformation.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Martensite twin lamellae are microscopic structures in the crystal lattice of martensite. They form during rapid cooling and appear as mirror symmetries that deform the material and increase its hardness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
These structures can form if cooling is too fast, leading to glass-hard martensite. This can cause hot cracks and low toughness in the material, which impairs mechanical properties.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
To avoid martensite twin lamellae, control the cooling rate. The critical time t8/5 should be between 5 and 25 seconds. If cooling times are too long or too short, the structure may be at risk.
