Martensitic Transformation
Martensitic transformation is a fast, shear-based lattice transformation during rapid cooling. It leads to a very hard and crack-prone structure.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Martensitic transformation occurs during rapid cooling from the high-temperature state. It results in a diffusionless, shear-based lattice transformation that leads to an extremely high dislocation density.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Martensite is very hard and prone to cracking. If cooling is too fast, it can form in the weld, leading to hot cracks and low toughness.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To avoid martensite, watch for controlled cooling. Use suitable coolants or cooling methods like the heat exchanger tube method (TIG). The critical time t8/5 should be between 5 and 25 seconds to achieve a balanced microstructure.
