Martensitic transformation hysteresis
The temperature difference between the start of the forward transformation during cooling and the start of the reverse transformation during reheating. It results from elastic and plastic deformation work during lattice distortion.
Martensitic transformation hysteresis means the transformation during cooling and reheating does not occur at the same temperature. This is important in welding because it affects residual stresses in the component. If you weld a steel that transforms martensitically, you must control the cooling. Too fast cooling makes the structure hard and crack-sensitive. So don't let the part cool too quickly, but keep the heat in the component, for example by preheating or controlled cooling.
