Tempered martensitic structure

The tempered martensite structure is generated during the thermal post-treatment of freshly quenched martensite via the controlled decomposition of supersaturated carbon into fine carbide precipitates. This process relieves internal stresses and optimizes the strength-to-toughness ratio.

During tempering, the supersaturated martensite decomposes in a controlled manner. Fine carbides precipitate, and internal stresses are relieved. The structure becomes tougher and gets its final mechanical properties. If you don't do this cleanly during welding, you'll quickly have glass-hard, crack-prone zones. So: After welding, temper the parts specifically and control the cooling, then you'll save yourself the trouble.
