Martensite start temperature

The critical temperature at which the diffusionless transformation of the parent phase into martensite initiates. It depends primarily on the carbon content.

Martensite forms when the steel cools too fast after welding. Then the weld becomes hard and brittle, and you risk cracks. If you cool too slowly, you get a coarse grain and lose toughness. So you have to hit the cooling rate so that the structure transforms cleanly. The critical temperature at which this happens depends on the carbon content – the more carbon, the more critical it becomes.
