Multi-pass welding geometry
The specific buildup of a weld from multiple successive passes to join heavy wall thicknesses in a thermally controlled manner. Each new pass provides a beneficial microstructural refinement of the underlying layer.
Multipass welding means you don't weld one thick seam in one go, but build up several thinner layers. Each new layer reheats the one below and makes the structure finer and tougher. If you slack off and don't keep an eye on the interpass temperature, the structure can become hard and brittle or too coarse. So: work cleanly layer by layer and don't let the seam overheat in between.
