Laser Metal Deposition
Metal powder surfacing welding is a welding process with laser that melts and joins metal powder. It is suitable for repairs and complex build-up.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
A laser beam melts the workpiece surface and the added metal powder simultaneously. The molten pool is held in place by the laser heat source and bonds to the existing metal structure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This process produces fine, homogeneous joints with high mechanical strength. However, inaccurate settings of the laser or powder feed can lead to porosity and unevenness.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Use a high-power laser (approx. 100-400 W) and adjust the powder feed precisely. Keep the distance between the laser and the workpiece constant (typically 2-5 mm). The welding speed should be around 1-3 m/min.
