Metallic Cladding

Application of a corrosion-resistant metal layer onto a mechanically strong but corrosion-prone base material via rolling, explosion bonding, or surfacing, combining structural strength with protection.

Plating means you apply a thin layer of a corrosion-resistant metal onto the base material. You do this either mechanically by rolling or explosion, or you weld the layer directly on. It's important that the plating is applied tightly and cleanly. If there are defects in it, you'll get corrosion later or the layer will peel off. When cladding by welding, you must meticulously ensure a clean, grease-free surface, otherwise the bond won't hold.
