Metallurgical melting irregularity
Metallurgical fusion irregularities lead to uneven filler distribution and local defects in the structure. This can cause porosity, non-uniform mechanical properties, and cracking.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Incomplete fusion happens because the base and filler metal don't mix fully during melting. This can be caused by too low a melting temperature, too high a cooling rate, or uneven heat transfer.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Irregular fusion leads to local defects in the structure, like porosity and uneven mechanical properties. This can cause cracking and reduce the toughness and strength of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Action Points
To minimize incomplete fusion, do the following:
• Use a high enough melting temperature to fully melt all filler material.
• Make sure the cooling rate is slow enough for even mixing.
• Use a uniform heat transfer medium to regulate the temperature in the weld pool.
