Metallurgical active powder
Metallurgically active powder is a finely divided additive that deliberately alloys elements like molybdenum or titanium into the melt. It improves resistance properties and prevents porosity.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Metallurgical active powder consists of fine particles that become active in the weld pool. They alloy targeted metals such as molybdenum or titanium into the base metal. The process improves the crystal structure and prevents porosity through homogeneous distribution.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Correct application of active powder increases the strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance of the weld. Incorrect amounts or missing powder alloying can lead to uneven distribution, which can cause porosity and cracks. Too much powder can wash out the microstructure and reduce hardness.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use active powder in the specified amount, usually 0.5 to 1 % of the weld metal weight. Apply it evenly on the surfaces to be welded before welding. Make sure the powder is fully melted and no unmelted particles remain in the microstructure. If you have porosity issues, check the amounts and the homogeneity of the distribution.
