Metallurgical deoxidizer
A metallurgical deoxidizer such as silicon or manganese binds oxygen from the weld pool and prevents porosity. It ensures a clean weld.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Metallurgical deoxidizers such as silicon or manganese react with dissolved oxygen in the molten weld pool. They bind it and form a slag that falls off during cooling. This prevents oxygen from getting into the weld and forming oxides.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Without deoxidizers, oxides can form in the weld, leading to porosity and weak spots. This can affect the strength and toughness of the joint. Too much deoxidizer can also cause problems, such as embrittlement or a weld that's too hard.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use 0.1 to 0.3 % silicon or 0.2 to 0.5 % manganese in the filler metal. Make sure the weld stays clean during cooling and no slag remains. Monitor the temperature and cooling time to ensure optimal deoxidation.
