Micro Plasma Arc Welding
Micro plasma welding is a precise fusion welding process for thin sheet with a constricted arc. It offers high arc dynamics and minimal distortion.
Physical-chemical mechanism of action
Micro plasma arc welding uses a very small, high-density arc that strongly heats the materials at the weld spot. The high temperature creates a molten zone where the metals join.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
This process is especially suitable for extremely thin sheets and offers a high level of precision. However, a lack of gas shielding can cause plasma spatter that may damage the workpiece. Inaccurate focusing of the arc can lead to distortion or irregularities in the weld bead.
Workshop practice & instructions
For micro plasma arc welding, use a high-density arc and make sure the gas supply is stable. Keep the arc constant and focused on the weld spot. Use suitable protective coverings or insulation to protect the workpiece from plasma spatter. The optimal sheet thickness is typically less than 1 mm.
