Microalloying Element Vanadium
Vanadium forms fine particles in the weld that refine the structure and increase hardness. It also prevents porosity and improves toughness.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Vanadium reacts in the weld pool with metal ions and forms fine, stable particles. These alloy into the structure and increase the number of grains. This leads to a finer microstructure.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The fine alloying of vanadium increases the yield strength and tensile strength of the material, making it more robust. It also prevents porosity through its deoxidizing effect. However, too much vanadium can over-harden the structure and lead to hot cracking if the cooling time is too short.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Use vanadium in the welding consumables at the specified content. Ensure that the cooling time after welding is sufficiently long (at least 10 seconds) to guarantee uniform cooling and avoid over-hardened structures.
