Microporosity by gas entrapment

Gas entrapment during solidification of the weld pool leads to microporous cavities in the weld metal, which reduce mechanical load capacity.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Gases like oxygen or hydrogen dissolve into the molten pool. As solubility drops during solidification, these gases get trapped as spherical voids in the weld metal.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Microporosity softens the weld metal and lowers its mechanical load capacity. It can lead to cracks and distortion, especially under high pressure or high temperatures.

Workshop practice & action points

To minimize microporosity, cool the weld as fast as possible. Avoid excess air supply and check gas levels in the pool. For heavy-duty applications, use a deoxidizer like silicon to tie up oxygen.
