Microcrack

A microscopic crack in the metal that is not visible to the naked eye and can serve as the origin for later fatigue fractures.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Microcracks form due to mechanical stress or chemical corrosion. They are so small they can't be seen without a microscope.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Microcracks can lead to fatigue failure, especially when the metal is under repeated loads. They grow slowly and can eventually become visible cracks.

Workshop practice & action points

Avoid microcracks by welding properly, e.g., by cooling adequately and using stable welding materials. Check the metal regularly for microcracks under a microscope.
